    Description

Spartacus (Universal International, 1960). Title Sequence Photo (13.5" X 30").
The legendary designer Saul Bass began his career in the cinema by creating the title sequences for Otto Preminger's Carmen Jones and The Man With the Golden Arm and followed the philosophy that the title sequence could convey information, emotion and actually promote the story just through graphic design. His work became an immediate success and other directors lined up to use his designs as well, including Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder and Stanley Kubrick. For Spartacus, a film based on the real-life slave who led a revolt against Rome, Bass used classic Roman statuary, and these images evoked pleading hands, weapons of battle, royal scepters, the bust of the slave himself and the crumbling bust of the emperor Julius Caesar-- all images that would pull the viewer immediately into the story and let them know that they were in for a tale of ancient Rome. About half of the opening titles used Roman statuary and the other half used Roman text and numbers. The image on this board, #27, depicts a right profile of the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. As it is used in the opening titles, the image was flipped and had "directed by STANLEY KUBRICK" superimposed over it, and thus, is one of the most important titles in the entire sequence. The image does have a few small paper lifts after black masking tape was pulled off at one time and there is some general wear to the edges and rounding to the corners. The black masking tape that is still in the upper border and at the top and lower center marks was placed on the image by the Saul Bass studio when shooting the sequence. The back of the board is stamped "Saul Bass & Assoc., 7758 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles 46, Cal". If one wants an original piece from one of Saul Bass's legendary title sequences, it just doesn't get any better than this. Fine/Very Fine.
