    Soviet Propaganda Poster (1935). Poster (29" X 39.5").
Gustav Klutsis (1895-1938) was a pioneering photographer and member of the Constructivist avant-garde in early 20th century Russia. With wife Valentina Kulagina, he created Soviet revolutionary and Stalinist propaganda. This poster, which is clearly dedicated to furthering Stalin's cult of personality, was produced in 1935. There was another poster released at the same time with the same artwork, but with different wording along the bottom reading "Long live the USSR -- Prototype of brotherhood of working people of all nations!" Stalin is commanding in profile, with supporters from across the provinces gazing adoringly upward at him. Despite his loyal service to the Communist party, Klutsis was taken into custody in Moscow in 1938, just before his scheduled departure to attend the New York World's Fair. It was not until 1989 that it was confirmed he had been executed on Stalin's order soon after his arrest. The poster has been restored to address a a chip in the upper left corner, a tear in the upper right corner, pinholes and a chip in the lower left corner, and one pinhole in the background. Touchup has been applied to the folds. Very Fine- on Linen.
