Description
The Batman (Columbia, 1943). Studio Issued Cloth Banner (35" X 117").Columbia's 15-episode serial was the first screen appearance of DC Comics' Caped Crusader. Here Batman (Lewis Wilson) and Robin, the Boy Wonder (Douglas Croft), battle Dr. Daka (J. Carrol Naish), a Japanese mastermind of a wartime espionage/sabotage group. Daka has an arsenal of weapons including a radium-powered death ray, a classic alligator pit to dispose of enemies, and the ability to turn men into electronic zombies. Posters from this early Batman serial are highly prized, and this electrifying banner, a Heritage first, is sure to create a tremendous buzz. What is most curious about this banner is that it shows Batman punching a character that closely resembles the Joker, the villain of comic book fame, though the Joker is in no way mentioned in this serial! These banners were advertised in the pressbook and were sometimes called Five Color Marquee or Flash Banners. They were used by the theaters to leave hanging throughout the ten to fifteen week run of the serial and are generally very rare. There are grommets in the borders and the corners are folded back. Light fold wear, extra wrinkling, and a small bit of smudging in the borders can be noted, but overall, the banner displays exceedingly well. Very Fine+.
