Tarzan the Mighty (Universal, 1928). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Three Sheet (41" X 80") Episode 6: "The Fiery Pit."
One of the greatest Universal serials of the late 1920s and loosely adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel Jungle Tales of Tarzan, but it took great liberties with the plot, This serial was originally intended to star Joe Bonomo, famous strongman, in the title role, but he was injured working on a different movie, and he was replaced by Frank Merrill, who while very muscular, had more of an athletic physique than Bonomo, and he was a pioneer in creating the vine-swinging technique which became a Tarzan staple in nearly every subsequent adaptation. Massive advertising once blanketed theatre lobbies for the Tarzan the Mighty but now any movie paper from this now lost serial is exceedingly rare, making this three sheet from the sixth chapter in the series an incredible find. This is offered for the first time by Heritage and is likely the only surviving example of this three sheet. It features great art of Tarzan rescuing castaway and jungle love interest Mary Trevor (Kingston) from a lion, and has been professionally restored and backed on linen. Corrections have addressed fold wear, tears, chips, and paper loss. Touchup has been applied to tears in the bottom right that extend to the bottom of the "TY" of "MIGHTY" and a chip in the "Y." There was paper loss in the borders, some of which have been replaced and airbrushed.
