    Description

    Spy Smasher (Republic, 1942). One Sheet (27" X 41").
Republic Pictures produced some of the best serials to ever appear in the cinema, and scored a major hit with Fawcett Comics The Adventures of Captain Marvel. This led the studio to see what other comic characters from Fawcett would be available for adaptation to the screen, and Spy Smasher was a natural selection. America had just entered WW II, and in an effort to support the war effort Republic sent Spy Smasher to rally the kids at Saturday matinees, giving them hope that the US would prevail. Kane Richmond portrayed the dual role of twins Alan and Jack Armstrong. Alan, who was believed dead in a plane crash, was secretly still alive and fighting Nazi saboteurs as The Spy Smasher. Along with The Adventures of Captain Marvel, Spy Smasher is considered one of the greatest serials of the screen. This was a special one sheet designed to promote the serial as well as Fawcett Comics publications. It is shown in the pressbook, but probably didn't see much distribution as we've only seen one other copy of this amazing poster. There were tape stains on the front of the poster in the corners and at the edge of some of the fold lines, including a few places within the art, small cross fold tears and a bit of paper loss at the center of the bottom horizontal fold. There has been color touch-up to all of the fold lines, in the black snipe at the bottom, and in the bottom of the white "box". All of this has been addressed through restoration, but could still be slightly improved upon. Fine- on Linen.
