Description

This Island Earth (Universal International, 1955). Fine+ on Linen. Poster (40" X 60.5) Style Z.
Not a single example of this incredibly scarce Style Z 40"x60" for the sci-fi classic has made an appearance at a major auction in the internet era. That is, until now. Feast your eyes on this vibrant full-color poster, featuring Rex Reason and Faith Domergue dressed in space suits while Rex Reason boxes a Metaluna Mutant. Commonly displayed outdoors at drive-ins and/or pasted up on walls, far fewer 40"x60"s from this era survive than do soft paper posters like one sheets. With their silkscreen graphics, bold colors, and generous surface area, oftentimes 40"x60"s are aesthetically superior to their smaller counterparts. This is one such instance, and a determined collector now has an opportunity to add a significant and sought-after piece to their 50s sci-fi holdings. The film follows scientist Cal Meacham, who is recruited by mysterious aliens from the planet Metaluna to help them in their war against another world. When he learns the aliens plan to enslave humanity, Meacham and his companion escape, witnessing the destruction of Metaluna in a spectacular finale that epitomizes 1950s sci-fi grandeur. Backed to linen, the poster received sensitive professional touchup to corner loss, border chips, tears, and creases throughout the interior. The borders, title treatment, and much of the color block background has been airbrushed. The result is a striking piece that would be a standout item in any collection.
