    Description

The Day the Earth Stood Still (20th Century Fox, 1951). Very Good on Linen. Three Sheet (41" X 79").
Although this wasn't the first film to start the sci-fi craze of the 1950s, it was arguably the most important. Director Robert Wise gave the genre legitimacy when he created the first "serious" science fiction epic that asked pertinent questions about how man would react to learning that we are not alone in our universe. Wise perfectly encapsulated the growing anxiety of American citizens as the world advanced into the Atomic Age, personifying hope for diplomacy and the fear of utter destruction in the film's extra terrestrial-visitors. Not only does the three sheet have an exceptional image of Gort at his most menacing, but it is one of the few advertisements to actually feature the image of leading actress Patricia Neal. The poster has had touchup to the folds and tears within the image, including Patricia Neal's head, legs, and arms. There were also some chips and paper loss within the interior, notably around Gort's hand and in his body, the background, and in the film credits. The borders were also trimmed by 1/2" to 1," but still retained the original copyright information at the bottom. The grade of Very Good is indicative of both the pre-restoration condition of this poster and the amount of restoration needed to return this three sheet to its original appearance.
