Description
Metropolis (UFA, 1929). Fine. First Release Japanese Program (12 Pages).Together, the husband and wife team of director Fritz Lang and writer Thea von Harbou created what has come to be known as the greatest science-fiction film in the history of cinema; Metropolis. While science-fiction wasn't new to cinema, the epic scale on which Metropolis was filmed fired the imaginations of millions as no other film had done before it. The story depicted a future world of the year 2000 and displayed the stark differences between the classes living in the cities; the wealthy elite who controlled all business and life from their towers in the sky, and the subserviant workers who lived meaningless lives beneath the city and provided the elites with everything they need. From the film's first release in Japan, this exceptionally scarce program was distributed to film patrons. The cover has a wonderful art deco design by Sewge and says Metropolis: Era 2000. The twelve pages include eight images with major scenes from the film. Some of those show Brigitte Helm as Maria in both her sweet persona and her evil controlling persona as the Robot, Gustav Frohlich as the rebellious and sympathetic son Freder, Alfred Abel as the oligarch Joh Frederson and Rudolf-Klein Rogge as the mad scientist Rotwang. One of the scenes depicts the Robot come to life and confronting Joh Frederson. Anything from this seminal science fiction epic is highly collected and this scarce program is a first offer from Heritage Auctions. There is a slight paper lift/ abrasion on the corner in the upper left, some slight wear to the spine and a very faint vertical crease from having been folded at one time. The staple holding the program together is no longer present so that the interior pages are loose.
