Description

Metropolis (UFA, 1927). Fine+. German Photo Lobby Card (8.25" X 11").
This is an original country-of-origin photo lobby card for the Fritz Lang sci-fi masterpiece. When it comes to material from the film, this is arguably the greatest image available, featuring Rotwang the mad scientist (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) in his lab with giant pentagram decor transferring Maria's (Brigitte Helm) likeness to the "False Maria" robot. Metropolis depicts a futuristic city sharply divided between wealthy elites living in luxury above ground and oppressed workers toiling below. When the ruler's son falls in love with a worker's daughter preaching unity, rebellion erupts as a mad scientist creates a robotic double to sow chaos. Fritz Lang's visionary silent epic blends expressionist design with social allegory, warning of the dehumanizing effects of industrialization and class division. The borders of the photo have been trimmed to the image and it exhibits corner creasing and tip surface loss, as well as an emulsion break in the upper image. It retains an embossed German censor stamp in the upper corner and archive stamps and labels on the verso.
