    Description

    F.P.1 Doesn't Answer (UFA, 1932). German Export A1 (24" X 37.5").
Already a challenge to keep voice reels in time with on-screen action, the early years of the talkies presented an unique and unforeseen challenge to films with international releases. Dubbing over original dialogue was next to impossible with the fickle sound system of the day, and filmmakers could no longer simply translate title inserts as they had in the days of silent filmography. Instead, directors had to choose a whole new cast for each international release, and such is the case for the sci-fi film F.P.1 Doesn't Answer. Director Karl Hardt recruited actors for a German, French, and American version, selecting Hans Albers, Charles Boyer, and Conrad Veidt respectively for the lead role of Major Ellissen. This German export poster features great profile portraits of Albers, Sybille Schmitz, and Paul Hartmann. Notice the absence of the film's title. This was common with export posters, as it would allow the theater displaying the poster to apply a title snipe in the desired language. Restoration has addressed a few small border tears, a larger tear in the lower edge into the background, a small crossfold chip, and minor fold creases. Touchup has been applied to the folds. Very Fine on Linen.
