Description
Forbidden Planet (MGM, 1956). Folded, Fine/Very Fine. One Sheet (27" X 41").The quintessential 1950s sci-fi poster, Robby the Robot menaces a lifeless Altaira Morbius (Anne Francis) on this must-have piece for any genre collector. Though the artwork is out of joint with the plot of the film, the result is one of the most indelible images in post-war popular culture. MGM's entry into the space (cinema) race was typical of the studio, with big budgets, bombastic color palettes, and then cutting-edge special effects. As VR and augmented reality encroach on everyday life, the prospect of a civilization evolved beyond instrumentality remains a thought provoking notion to contemporary audiences. Folded as issued, the poster exhibits a 1" fold separation at the center upper and lower borders, a smaller separation at upper left edge fold, a trace of fold wear from storage and handling, a few pinholes in each corner, light even toning throughout, grease pencil inventory numbers on verso, faint diagonal creases transferred throughout and an extra vertical fold, also transferred throughout. The piece remains in entirely unrestored condition, (a true rarity these days for this iconic artifact with virtually every example offered being linen-backed), and can be fully enjoyed without intervention.
