Description

A Clockwork Orange (Warner Brothers, 1971). Alternate One Sheet (27" X 41").
The original poster for this groundbreaking film with the Philip Castle artwork was used for the initial X-rated release in all the major markets, beginning with the four-city premiere engagements in New York , Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto in December, 1971. The film, in its X-rated version, continued playing for the next six months in all key North American cities, almost always establishing house records. When Clockwork was marginally altered to achieve an R-rating, Stanley Kubrick wanted to call attention to the rating with another image, as the Castle artwork had already become iconic and the film would now be available for viewing by a wider audience. He liked this design created by David Pelham for the Canadian paperback edition of the Anthony Burgess novel, and had it adapted as the new poster for an R-announcement release. It was used for a short time before the original Castle image was reinstituted. The version offered here had a limited press run and as it was directly tied to the American rating, it was only seen in North America, whereas the Castle design was used throughout the world. This piece is therefore the rarest of official Clockwork Orange posters. The one sheet has been restored to address minor fold wear, pinholes in the corners, and light horizontal creasing in the top section. A stunning acquisition for fans of the genius Kubrick! Very Fine on Linen.
