Description

2001: A Space Odyssey (MGM, 1969). One Sheet (27" X 41") Psychedelic Eye Style.
It has been cited as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made and after 45 years, still retains that distinction. But when the film opened in 1968, it created as much controversy as it did sensation. The surreal ending that could be interpreted in a number of different ways captured the imaginations of audiences -- especially the younger generation. It became the thing to do to go to the film to experience the mind-blowing special effects at the film's end. Some enterprising ad men working for MGM capitalized on this when the film's 70 mm prints were re-launched in New York City in 1969 and created two posters that used the tagline, The Ultimate Trip. One poster featured the Starchild that appears in the film's closing moments and the other featured a Psychedelic Eye with the Starchild at it's center. These posters were used exclusively for the campaigns to "wild" posters around New York City and other metropolitan areas. To "wild" meant to post the posters on temporary construction sight walls and anywhere that one could paste a one sheet poster! Thus, these are the rarest of all 2001: A Space Odyssey one sheets. Neither of the two styles of "wilded" posters had the NSS information printed in the borders. Other than a very few small bends within the image and a few minor crimps and extremely tiny edge tears on the right side, this poster is in very clean condition. The poster comes with the original New York Transit Authority shipping label. Rolled, Very Fine+.
