Description
Salle de L'Étoile (1910). French Theatre Poster, French Grande (46" X 62.75").The French visual artist, Leon Gabriel L. Coulet fashioned this lovely stock stone lithograph around 1910 for the Salle de l'Etoile (The Hall of Stars), in Saint-Etienne, just a day trip 310 miles south of Paris. He cleverly illustrates a voluptuous dance hall performer in red gloves and gown, amid flowing theatre curtains, brandishing a star-topped staff in her hand echoing the name of the theatre. Her right hand rests on a vintage film projector of the day, throwing the film onto the open sheeting to the right of the poster, where the current attractions would be listed, much like vaudeville bills in the US. A happy crowd at the bottom of the poster wears their finest, with the requisite opera glasses in use. Imagine what might have filled one of these bills...a traveling shadow puppet act, mime troupe, a famous magic act, and then the finale of the evening, a cinema showing! Perhaps you were fortunate enough to see one of director Jean Durand's latest short film love affairs of the American Wild West, his 1910's Amitie de Cow-Boy, or Les Aventures d'un Cow-Boy a Paris. The poster has had minimal restoration, and is linenbacked, for only some middle field background and top left tears, and some staple holes in the top center border and letter "O". There is a small, slight lifting of the paper from the linen in the center of the poster. The poster was printed by A. Pomeon and Son. This would make a dramatic display on any collector's wall, a film room, theatre, or restaurant. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
