    Description

To Have and Have Not (Warner Brothers, 1944). One Sheet (27" X 41").
World War II was still raging when director Howard Hawks put this feature into production. Rumor has it that Hawks was drinking with Ernest Hemingway and bet him that he could make a hit out of Hemingway's "worst" novel. Obviously, Hawks won the bet as he used author William Faulkner on the screenplay. The story took a major reworking to capitalize on the amazing success of Casablanca a year before. Warner Brothers was looking for another film in the same vein; essentially a film promoting the French resistance against the Nazis, and cast Humphrey Bogart as an American boat captain living in French Martinique helping to smuggle a resistance fighter. Lauren Bacall was cast as the femme fatale and Bogart fell hard for her! So much so, that their romance and marriage a year later would become fodder of the tabloid press for years. This poster features the pair in a passionate embrace that would lead to one of the classic Hollywood romances. The poster has had very minor touchup to the fold lines. There has been a bit more work to the lower credits where there was a snipe at one time. This is the case with almost every copy of this one sheet as the credits were altered prior to the films release and a snipe with the corrections was glued over the area. Some of the lower border has been airbrushed as well. Fine+ on Linen.
