    Description

    Morocco (Paramount, 1930). One Sheet (27.5" X 41") Style B.
One of less than a handful known, this style B one sheet is a glorious stone litho homage to the cinematic triumph of Morocco. So virtually unobtainable is paper from the film, that Heritage has only sold one large format piece, a banner, in its fifteen year history of movie poster auctions. The storied start of the film's leading lady, Hollywood legend Marlene Dietrich, goes something like this: Berlin, 1929. Director Josef von Sternberg, while enjoying a cabaret show one evening, is instantly and irreversibly mesmerized by one magnetic performance. He immediately recognized Dietrich's undeniable star presence, and cast the young actress in his next production, The Blue Angel. That film became a major hit and made Dietrich an overnight sensation. From there, he signed her to a contract and brought her to the US for her American movie debut, Morocco. Aided by some of the best cinematography of all time, Dietrich would leave audiences spellbound by her sensuality, her deep voice, her cross-dressing sense of style and her confidence while kissing another woman (it was still pre-Code Hollywood). As the cabaret singer Amy Jolie, Dietrich ensnares men of all types, captures the heart of a millionaire (Adolphe Menjou), but falls for the womanizing Legionnaire Gary Cooper. No backdrop, costars, or scenes were necessary for the one sheet format. All it needed was the intimate portrait of Dietrich and Cooper, two of film's most photogenic and alluring faces. Prior to restoration, signs of handling included small bits of paper loss in the top right quadrant and at the crossfold, a small tear between the noses of Cooper and Dietrich, and several small chips in the bottom border. Another sighting of the style B anytime soon is unlikely, especially one with such a high degree of presentability. Very Fine- on Linen.
