    Under the Cherry Moon Lot (Warner Bros., 1986). Very Fine. Preliminary Sketches (5) (11" X 16", 13" X 17", 9.75" X 13.75", 12" X 15"), Reference Photos (3) (11" X 14" & 16" X 20"), Multi-Layered Production Mock-Up (23.5" X 35.5"). From the personal collection of Ron Larson, Art Director on Under the Cherry Moon.
After the runaway success of musician-turned-actor Prince's film debut in Purple Rain, Warner Bros. sought to build on that success with his next project, Under the Cherry Moon. After taking over directorial duties from Mary Lambert, Prince oversaw all aspects of production including the design of the film's movie posters. Offered in this lot are eight production elements that resulted in the film's final poster design. There are pencil sketch designs of the Art Deco style which express the film's ambiguous time period, preliminary sketches and head shots of Prince himself that were combined into one image, as Prince did not approve of any of the sketches of himself. Also included is a production mock-up of the poster using five different overlays of tissue paper and frosted and/or clear mylar sheets. Prince wanted two versions of the poster to be mocked up, one in color and one in black and white (the black-and-white was approved and printed on silver mylar). This mock-up includes the elements for the color version. Overall this lot is in excellent condition with slight smudging, small tears and faint surface blemishes on the preliminary pieces. There is some paper loss on the tissue layer of the poster mock-up. A fun and one-of-a-kind group of items for any collector!
