    Description

    Regeneration (Norman, 1923). Three Sheet (41" X 77.75").
After decades of conflict and tension from the fallout of the Civil War, segregation had proliferated nearly every aspect of society by the 1920s, including the movie theaters. The plots of comedies, dramas, romances, and adventure films revolved around the lives of fair beauties and light-skinned gentlemen, almost without exception. Even most pictures boasting of "all colored" casts were typically stacked with actors of a Caucasian persuasion, covered in makeup and grease paint. Here, producer and director Richard Norman saw a niche to fill, a slice of the movie-going market that had been mostly neglected for the past two decades. Motivated partly by profit and partly by the poor state of race relations, Norman set up his own studio catering to African American audiences eager to see themselves reflected on the big screen. Though of thoroughly European descent himself, Norman helped make inroads within the entertainment industry with his race films, boasting real "all-colored" casts and thrilling stories. Among his most popular productions are the innovative aerial adventure The Flying Ace, the Western The Bull-Dogger starring real-life rodeo star Bill Pickett, and this Robinson Crusoe-esque castaway story, Regeneration. A very rare first-time offer at Heritage, this lovely stone litho three sheet once showed fold wear, creases, and a few small chips in the borders and folds. Restoration has also corrected tears from the edges into the interior and off some of the folds, as well as a larger chip in the bottom right border. This is one of only two copies of this poster we are aware of. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
