Recruiting Poster (U.S. Army, 1910s). Fine+ on Linen. Poster (29" X 39.5") "Men Wanted for the Army," Michael P. Whelan Artwork.
Sending out a call for new recruits, this pre-WWI recruitment poster uses the West's wide open plains to attract intrepid young men to the service. The stately illustration comes from the brush of Michael P. Whelan, who would continue to make recruitment posters until after the US joined the the first world war. Signs of use include mild edge wear, light creases, thin surface scuffs and scratches, and tears at the edges. There are minute chips, faint smudges, and small paper lifts in the borders. There was a chip in the upper left that has been reattached during restoration and a few other chips with splices applied. The poster also displays faint staining in the lower borders and background that has been partially airbrushed in a few places.

    Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000.
