    Description

Queensland, Australia Travel Poster (Queensland Government Tourist Bureau, Circa 1935). Poster (25.25" X 39.25").
Australian artist Percy Trompf (1902-1964) designed thousands of advertising posters and became well known for his works for the Australian National Travel Association and the Victorian Government Railway. His sunny, playful posters were especially appreciated during the Depression, and gained him international attention in the 1930s. The example of Trompf's work offered here was created for the Queensland Government Tourist Bureau, boasting that region as "The Tropics at Your Door," with two penguins strolling "off to the north for warmth," suitcases in hand. To the right is a map that begins with the city of Brisbane, the gateway to "The Sunshine Route." The route continues up the coast, through Townsville, the jumping off point to the awe-inspiring Great Barrier Reef. Other notable destinations include Bundaberg (famous local rum), Whitsunday Islands (impossibly soft white sand beaches), and Cairns (tropical rainforests galore). A perfect poster to put one in the mood to go walkabout, the piece is also in very presentable condition. Touchup has been applied to pinholes in the corners and top border, a chip in the top right and top left corner, and slight surface paper loss on the verso. Fine+ on Linen.
