Description

    Psycho (Paramount, 1960). Six Sheet (78.5" X 81").
In the original novel by Robert Bloch, Norman Bates is an overweight, middle-aged drunkard, but director Alfred Hitchcock (and screenwriter Joe Stefano) decided Norman should be young and appealing, if a bit sad, and casting the boyish, handsome Anthony Perkins in the role would throw suspicion away from his character as the killer. It worked brilliantly, and audiences of the day were truly shocked at the film's conclusion. With similar elements to the movie's other poster formats --jaggedly cut collage pieces in jarring colors and imagery of a highly exposed Janet Leigh--the six sheet's scale further enhances the already terrifying effect of the design. The poster has been professionally restored with touchup to a small mount of writing in Leigh's chest, a vertical tear, and slight paper loss in Janet Leigh's body. Staple holes in the borders and within the image, tears in the pink background, a tear in the top border that extends in the black background, fold wear with small chips, creases and a small hole in bottom black background, and two border chips. All have either been touched up with color pencil or airbrushed. The result is an enormous poster that evokes a chilling response, much like the film it represents and rare in this format. Fine+ on Linen.
