Description

Phantom of the Opera (Universal, 1947). First Post-War Release French Grande (47" X 63") Constantin Belinsky Artwork.
A timeless classic hailed as one of the best horror novels of the 20th century, Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera has been adapted for the screen and stage time and time again, leaving audiences breathless with its grand story of murder and obsession. With such an opulent setting, Universal chose the backdrop of Parisian high society as the first horror film to use the bright tones of three strip Technicolor throughout a full feature. A wise choice, as this Arthur Lubin production was nominated for a total of four Academy Awards, winning the categories of Art Direction and Cinematography. To match this "Triumph of Color," as the poster proclaims, Constantin Belinsky created this absolutely stunning illustration of the Phantom in action during one of this story's most iconic, riveting scenes. Sold for the first time ever at Heritage, this French grande has had touchup applied to the folds and a separation in the central vertical fold, pinholes in the borders, a horizontal crease in "Opera," slight crossfold chips in the upper horizontal fold, small chips and holes in the borders, and a tear in the upper right corner of the lower panel. There is some post-restoration creasing to the right of the credits with some rubbing of the ink. Very Fine- on Linen.

Today I received the catalog which is a work of art unto itself. When I found my lot I was literally blown away by what Craig had done with the presentation....... quite amazing to say the least!
