DescriptionThe Letter (Warner Brothers, 1947). Folded, Fine/Very Fine. First Post-War Release Italian Foglio (27.5" X 39.5") Luigi Martinati Artwork.
William Wyler's masterful film noir begins with a long tracking shot that would be imitated years later by Orson Welles in Touch of Evil. Bette Davis is the femme fatale who quips, "I still love the man I killed," and is then declared not guilty of the murder. Her attorney secretly purchased a letter that would have implicated Davis's character, and then buries it to get her acquitted by self-defense. The exquisite image of the steely-eyed Davis on this poster was created by famed Italian artist Luigi Martinati. Indications of use include edge and fold wear, mild fold separations, pinholes, and soft creasing. The poster has a few moderate tears, small chips, and pieces of cellophane tape on the verso with some tape stain bleedthrough on the front. Also present is toning consistent with the poster's age and there is a small piece of archival tape bracing a tear on the verso. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
Estimate: $1,200 - $2,400.
