    Description

World War I Propaganda (U.S. Navy Publicity Bureau, 1917). Fine+ on Linen. Trimmed Recruitment Poster (34" X 25.75") "Enlist in the Navy," Louis Raemaeker Artwork.
"Americans! Stand by Uncle Sam for liberty against tyranny!" The powerful words of Theodore Roosevelt ring loud and clear with this stirring piece of WWI propaganda. With the shores of America in the distance, this striking image features Uncle Sam, dressed as a soldier, brandishing a pistol at the royally dressed Kaiser, while protecting a woman who has collapsed under the weight of a cross etched with the words "Barbarism" and "Slavery." Dutch artist Louis Raemaeker's work was so effective, he was placed on trial for endangering Dutch neutrality. After his acquital, Raemaeker quickly fled for Britain, as the Germans had placed a price of 12,000 guilders on his head... dead or alive. Although linen-backed, this poster has received no further restoration and shows slight edge wear, thin creases, small tears, and pinholes. There is some reattached paper loss in the top right corner, minute paper lifts, and some unobtrusive smudges. The upper border has been trimmed. Fine+ on Linen.

    Estimate: $600 - $1,200.
