DescriptionWerewolf of London (Universal, 1935). Cut Linen Finish Pressbook (17 Pages, 13" X 26").
In creating the look of the werewolf for this picture (the first werewolf ever to be seen on the silver screen), ace makeup artist Jack Pierce - responsible for the look of some of Universal's greatest monsters - originally settled on a more hirsute version, one that looked very much like the makeup eventually used in The Wolf Man (1941). Reportedly, star Henry Hull begged off wearing the makeup, as its application was exceptionally time consuming, so a less hairy version was created at his request. In spite of the makeup revision, the result was a classic film that continues to thrill and entertain viewers to this day. As with all of the Universal monster pictures, demand for paper from this movie is extremely high. But pressbooks for this particular title are especially rare, and this one contains its original herald and ad supplement. It has edge and spine wear, spine separations, small tears and chips, creases, and extra horizontal folds. One ad supplement page has cellophane tape on the verso with slight stains. The back cover has some unobtrusive writing and the pressbook has four cuts with removed content. However, the poster page and the front and back covers are all intact and retain their fabulous color. Folded, Fine+.
Estimate: $3,000 - $6,000.
