DescriptionGeorge --The Supreme Master of Magic (Otis Litho, Mid-1920s). 24 Sheet (104" X 232").
Grover G. George (1887-1958) was born in Zanesville, Ohio, and developed a love for magic while watching Keller the Great and Howard Thurston at the old Schultz Opera House. By the 1920s, George was touring large, well respected theaters, but faced fierce competition from Thurston. In 1924, he made the key decision to leave the U.S., embarking on a hugely successful tour of Cuba, Central and South America. Although he attempted to return to American stages, George did not reach the same exalted status of "The Greatest Magician on Earth" that he had outside of the U.S. He retired in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he ran a prosperous business manufacturing projection machines for theaters. Unused posters for his American Tour remained at the Otis Litho Company until they were purchased by magic dealer George Heaney, and were later discovered in a Wisconsin barn in the 1980s. This fabulous billboard-sized poster shows edge and fold wear, fold separations, mild tears, and slight chipping. There is a printing irregularity along the right side of the center horizontal fold. A section of paper loss along the lower leftmost vertical fold has been reattached with archival tape on the verso. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
Estimate: $500 - $1,000.
