    Description

Over the Top (Vitagraph, 1918). Three Sheet (41" X 80.5") Frederic C. Madan Artwork.
Arthur Guy Empey was a whirlwind from Utah who blew into Hollywood in 1918. Empey had been an American enlistee in the British Army during the early days of World War I, and was wounded at the Battle of the Somme. While he was recovering, he wrote a book about his experiences called Over the Top. The book was a huge success, and Empey made arrangements with Vitagraph to direct and star in a film version of it. (While the poster does say "Himself," the movie is fictionalized and has very little to do with the plot of the book.) During this time, Empey also wrote popular song lyrics, with titles like Your Lips are No Man's Land But Mine and Liberty Statue is Looking Right at You. He continued making films, first as an actor and later behind the scenes, until his inability to adapt to the coming of sound forced him into a pulp writing career. This three sheet has touchup on the folds, chips on the bottom border and top vertical fold, and a tear in the woman's face. The glory of stone litho was never more evident than in this beautiful image by Frederic C. Madan. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
