North by Northwest (MGM, 1959). Three Sheet (41" X 79").
Alfred Hitchcock was known for his "wrong man" scenarios, and this is one of the best. While filming Vertigo with James Stewart, Hitchcock described the plot line that he and writer Ernest Lehman had come up with for Hitch's next film. Stewart took to the idea right away and almost demanded to play the role of Roger O. Thornhill. Hitchcock, who had had Cary Grant in mind from the beginning, had to wait until Stewart was deeply involved in Anatomy of a Murder before he offered the part to him. Stewart reluctantly had to turn him down. Though Hitchcock and Lehman worked together on the script, the idea of the final innuendo shot of the train entering the tunnel was Hitch's alone. Lehman said, "There's no way I can take credit for the tunnel--dammit!" This three sheet has a pinhole slightly into the background, faint writing bleedthrough by James Mason's name, a couple of light tape stains, and staining on the bottom left, top right and upper background. There has been touchup to the folds, edge tears, a few a chips in the upper and bottom borders, and tape stains in the borders, upper horizontal fold, and at the joint. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
