No Father to Guide Him (Pathé, 1925). One Sheet (27" X 41").
Charley Chase's contributions to the silent film era extend way beyond his brilliant acting, writing, and directing. What is often overlooked is his pivotal role in transforming screen comedy from chaotic slapstick violence to a more refined artform, a precursor to modern sitcom. This clever Morgan stone lithograph is a perfect example of just that, as a laugh inducing role reversal plays out--the "father" stands naked in a barrel on a crowded beach, completely aloof, with hair perfectly in place, while the "son" takes the typical, quizzical parental stance, complete with hand thoughtfully to chin. The pre-teen Mickey Bennett plays the son, and was seemingly a charmed actor, as he not only got to work with Chase in several films, but was chosen from many wishful kids to star with Babe Ruth in Babe Comes Come (1927), and W. C. Fields in Tillie's Punctured Romance (1928). In almost flawless condition, this beauty showed light bleed through in the right border from a stamp on the verso and minor fold wear, both of which have been addressed with careful restoration. Very Fine on Linen.
