Description

No Father to Guide Him (Pathé, 1925). One Sheet (27" X 41").
Our vote is in for Charley Chase as the fourth best comedian of the silent era. He was brilliant at acting, writing, and directing all aspects of screen comedy. But what most collectors haven't examined, is how important his role was in transforming screen comedy from chaotic slapstick violence to a more "sophisticated" method, absolutely on the groundfloor of what we call "the modern sitcom." This wonderful Morgan stone lithograph is a great example of just that. The "father" stands naked in a barrel on a crowded beach, completely aloof, with hair perfectly in place, while the "son" has the normally parental stance of quizzically pondering as to just what is going on, complete with hand thoughtfully to chin. That's Mickey Bennett, by the way, who led a charmed life as a pre-teen. He not only got to work with Chase in several films, he was chosen from many wishful kids and starred with Babe Ruth as The Mascot in Babe Comes Come (1927), and W. C. Fields in Tillie's Punctured Romance (1928) as The Bad Boy. Professional linenbacking with very little restoration needed has this poster absolutely sparkling. There was some minor edge wear in the left border, very small pin point crossfold separations, and a very small chip in the lower right corner, which wasn't restored, and detracts nothing from this beauty! Very Fine on Linen.
