Description

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (20th Century Fox, 1939). One Sheet (27" X 41").
Heritage is delighted to offer this very rare one sheet from this 20th Century Fox's smash hit, a follow up to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles. Set in Victorian England (all of the later Universal films would be set in contemporary time), it matches Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and faithful companion Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) against Holmes' arch rival, Professor Moriarty. Co-starring Ida Lupino as Ann Brandon and George Zucco as Moriarty, this classic film would set the benchmark for all of the twelve other films made at Universal Studios in the series. Interestingly enough, this was the only entry in the film series not based on a Doyle story, but on the famous stage play by William Gillette. Restoration to this poster has corrected fold wear, pin and staple holes in the borders and background, small tears at the edges, and minor chips in the top and bottom crossfolds. There was a vertical tear from the bottom border to Nigel Bruce's credit, as well as a diagonal tear from the bottom of Ida Lupino's dress into the "L" of "Sherlock." The borders have been airbrushed, making this poster ready for display. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
