    Description

Shadows over Chinatown (Monogram, 1946). One Sheet (27" X 41").
Chastised today for simplistic stereotyping, the forty-seven films of the Charlie Chan series had their genesis in an effort to fight the prevailing attitudes of the day. While vacationing in Hawaii, author Earl Derr Biggers discovered a Chinese policeman in Honolulu who was having great success in cleaning up the drug trade there. When Biggers started writing his first mystery novel, the policeman came to mind. "I had seen movies depicting and read stories about Chinatown and wicked Chinese villains, and it struck me that a Chinese hero, trustworthy, benevolent, and philosophical, would come nearer to presenting a correct portrayal of the race." Biggers eventually met the policeman, Chang Apana, and gave him an autographed copy of his fourth Chan book, The Black Camel. The poster has misfolds, creasing, pinholes in the background, a few tears in the image with one in the title, and tears in the borders. Touchup has been applied to the folds, and the borders have been painted. Fine+ on Linen.
