Description

The Jazz Singer (Warner Bros., 1927). Very Fine- on Linen. 24 Sheet (106.5" X 233.5").
On October 6, 1927, The Jazz Singer premiered at the Warner Theater in New York City, trailing only Wings and The King of Kings in box office receipts that year, and its unqualified success established Warner Bros. as a major studio, and is uniquely credited with causing the ascendancy of sound films and the demise of the silent era. It was through the studio's novel Vitaphone sound process that Al Jolson, one of the biggest names on the vaudeville stage, became the first man to speak in a feature length film. His first words were prophetic - "Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain't heard nothin' yet!," Scholar Corin Willis wrote "The Jazz Singer is unique in that it is the only film where blackface is central to the narrative development and thematic expression." The production costs totaled $422,000, which was a considerable gamble for the cash-strapped studio, but it massively paid off. Very few posters of this size from the 1920s survive, as all billboard posters from this period are incredibly scarce, but even more so those from major films. Professional restoration has been applied to correct creases and tears, scattered small areas of paper loss in the image, including above Jolson's eye, in the fold and around the "L" of "Al," and paper loss and staining in the first "O" of "Jolson." Still visible is a minor paper lift in the upper right background, and areas of printing bleed-through.
