    Description

The Great Ziegfeld (MGM, 1936). Good on Linen. Three Sheet (41.5" X 80"). Style B, Ted "Vincentini" Ireland Artwork. From the Mike Kaplan Collection.
Never offered before at Heritage and at one point showcased at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Grand Lobby Gallery, this style B three sheet features a stunning illustration from Ted "Vincentini" Ireland of the film's major players in a dreamlike composition. William Powell plays Florenz Ziegfeld in this semi-biographical picture, a theatrical showman famous for his grand productions full of elaborate costumes and sets. Universal originally held the rights to the story, but sold the copyright to MGM when it became apparent that the costs of such a glamorous film would break the studio's budget. Luise Rainer and Myrna Loy take over as the female leads, a performance for which Rainer won the first of her two Oscars. This lovely poster has had restoration efforts to correct fold wear and separation, pinholes, chipping in the borders and folds, as well as large tears, including a tear that extended from the lower left border to the lower right crossfold. The entire upper panel has been recreated during restoration, but is so well replicated it is difficult to distinguish it from the actual poster.
