Description

Murder, My Sweet (RKO, 1940s). Italian First Post War Release 2 - Foglio (39.5" X 55").
At the beginning of the film noir era, director Edward Dmytryk cast an unlikely star as the private detective Philip Marlowe. The part went to Dick Powell, known as a crooner and the star of many musicals of the 1930s. And to help sell Powell in this hard-boiled performance, the studio changed the title of Raymond Chandler's novel from Farewell, My Lovely to Murder, My Sweet as they felt audiences might think this was another musical with the original title. Powell was the first to appear as Marlowe and the role became so iconic of the noir era that other Hollywood legends would also try to fill the flat-foot's shoes including Humphrey Bogart and Robert Mitchum. This may be one of the definitive posters created for the film as it features a dead-on likeness of Powell and the best portrait of his femme fatale, Claire Trevor, that we've ever seen. The poster has had very minimal touch up to the fold lines with just a bit more to the ends of the folds in the white edges. Art by Alverardo Ciriello. Very Fine on Linen.
