Description

Moscow, Ancient Capital of the Czars (Torino Società Anonima Ambrosio, 1910). Italian 2 - Foglio (39" X 55"). Original Title: Mosca Artistica e Panoramica.
The city of Moscow was founded in 1147 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, who built the first kremlin along the city's river. Over the centuries the population soared, and by 1900, the city was home to over one million inhabitants. Italian film director Giovanni Vitrotti (1874-1966) released this documentary in 1910, and as the title suggests, it's a nod to the long reign of the imperial Czars. That same year, the empire's most famous writer-philosopher-political thinker Leo Tolstoy died. This was also the age of many other Russian artistic luminaries -- Sergei Diaghilev founded the Ballets Russes in Paris, Anton Chekhov's stories were being staged, and Igor Stravinsky composed the ballet Petrushka starring legendary dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. The majestic stone litho poster for the film offers a glimpse into pre-revolutionary Moscow, with the broken 204 ton Tsar Bell (1735) resting resolutely in the foreground. Behind the monument, the gilded cupolas of Cathedral Square and the Ivan the Great Bell Tower salute the setting sun. This beauty is an extremely rare poster that has only edge wear with tears, dust shadows and toning in the borders, cross fold separation, and fold wear. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
