    Description

Morphinomine by Eugene Grasset (1897). Rolled, Very Fine+. Signed Original Lithograph Artwork on Art Paper (16.75" X 22.5").
Remembered as one of the foremost artists to develop the European Art Nouveau style, Eugene Grasset spread his influence over a wide array of artistic mediums during the Belle Époque. Skilled in painting, sculpting, fabrics, and jewelry, Grasset eventually became a master printmaker, creating numerous illustrations popular in both France and America. This famous lithograph shows little of his usual clean and flowing style, instead opting for a rougher feel appropriate for the title, Morphinomine. Although his works typically featured serene maidens in natural settings, this grim illustration shed light on the plight of morphine-addicted prostitutes in the late 1890s, a then-taboo subject in the world of fine art. Making its Heritage debut, the paper has slight edge wear, a few light creases, and a couple of minor tears. There are some ink marks along the right edge and a few faint smudges, most likely from the production process. A very rare piece from the print's original limited run, the lithograph is hand signed and titled by Eugene Grasset at the bottom below the image. Rolled, Very Fine+.
