Description

Morocco (Paramount, 1931). French Horizontal Double Grande (55.5" X 89.5") Roger Soubie Artwork.
Considered to be the only known copy still in existence, Heritage is thrilled to present this incredible French stone litho poster from Josef von Sternberg's classic drama. With a cool gaze and commanding attitude, Marlene Dietrich steals the spotlight with her performance as Amy Jolly, a jaded night club singer trying to forget the past and unsure of her future. Gary Cooper and Adolphe Menjou play opposite Dietrich in a tawdry love triangle, with Cooper's womanizing Legionnaire well foiled against the arduous loyalty of Menjou's rich suitor. True to Sternberg's style, Morocco is a sumptuous production with a masterfully crafted atmosphere; an immersive experience with small, but vitally realistic details to the set, dialogue, and costumes. Sternberg's brilliant handling of the film resulted in an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, as well as Best Actress in a leading role for Dietrich, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography. Definitely a pre-Code affair, Morocco also featured plenty of scandalous elements that would still be considered controversial today, particularly Dietrich's display of her bisexuality with her gender-bending tuxedo number and quick kiss on the lips of a female audience member. Bearing a magnificent image for a magnificent film, Roger Soubie's depiction of the sultry Dietrich with her "come hither" stare is perhaps one of the best illustrations ever painted of the gorgeous star. This beautiful, one of a kind piece shows scattered pinholes and mild surface paper loss in the interior, image ghosting to the right of Cooper's image, and some staining with slight surface rippling in the borders and interior. There are paper splices and tears in the borders, and a splice in the background into the first part of Gary Cooper's credit. The poster also shows two stains in Cooper's cheek. Despite these issues, this poster is a stunning sight to behold, and would be a prized trophy for any collector. Fine on Linen.

    Estimate: $20,000 - $40,000.
