    Description

Monster on the Campus by Reynold Brown (Universal International, 1958). Signed Gouache on Board Painting (22" X 28.5").
Reynold Brown is without a doubt one of the most well known and influential artists in the world of movie posters. A creative illustrator who adopted a realist style, Brown created magnificent works of art for over 250 films, including classics such as The Alamo, Spartacus, Ben-Hur, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Tarantula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Time Machine, and I Was a Teenage Werewolf. While working as an inker and drawer on the comic strip "Tailspin Tommy," Brown was encouraged by Norman Rockwell to quit the comics and seek out jobs as an illustrator. This led him to land jobs with North American Aviation in California, Boys' Life, Popular Science, and eventually as an instructor at Art Center College of Design, where he taught future movie poster artists Bob Peak and Drew Struzan. In 1951, Brown would meet Misha Kallis, an art director for Universal Pictures, ultimately leading to his work on his first film poster, The World in His Arms. He continued to work on posters through the early 1970's, creating iconic images that, in some cases, were more memorable than the films. Here is an original work by Brown for the Jack Arnold horror feature, Monster on the Campus. Brown's attention to detail and realistic style are evident, as each brush stroke is meticulous, showcasing the slightest of details. Note the intricacies of the image, such as the fur of the monster, the cracks in its fingernails, the hair on the frightened students, and even the stripes on the American flag in the background. This is an amazing work from a masterful illustrator. The painting has been signed in the lower right corner of the image by Brown. The lettering for the title is applied directly onto the painting and over the painting is the original plastic overlay, which has the credits and taglines strategically placed for the poster. The overlay shows chipping and cracking. There is tape and tape remnant from when the overlay was put on the board that does not affect Brown's magnificent work. Collectors will not want to miss this tremendous opportunity to add a unique piece from a brilliant artist to their collection. Very Fine.
