Description

Modern Times (United Artists, 1936). Leader Press One Sheet (27.5" X 40.5").
Charlie Chaplin was a master of communicating nuanced feelings through action, expression, and touchingly funny situations. With the coming of sound pictures in the late 1920s, silents were thought to be dead, but not to Chaplin and his legions of fans. Three of his silent masterpieces were made after the advent of sound: The Circus (1928), City Lights (1931), and Modern Times, made well into the talking era, which used voices only when coming from machines. Chaplin hit upon the idea of showing his Little Tramp having to adapt to this new industrialized and complicated world. It hit a nerve with Depression-era audiences, and was an important success for the comedian, who also composed the score featuring the timeless song "Smile." A work of perfection, with iconic scenes of Chaplin pulled through the gears of machinery, then unwittingly leading a parade of unhappy workers, and ending with a hopeful scene of The Tramp walking down the road with his Gamin, played by his love Paulette Goddard. Offered here is a simple but powerful poster of the beloved filmmaker. It shows one pinhole in each corner, fold separations with archival tape on the reverse, and one corner bend. Fine+.
