    Description

The Marx Brothers by Al Hirschfeld (2000). Very Fine+. Signed Original Mixed Media Artwork on Illustration Board (21" X 27").
Making its debut appearance at Heritage, this one-of-a-kind piece comes from the pen of the greatest caricaturist the world has ever known, Al Hirschfeld. Over the course of decades, his name has become indelibly linked to artistic interpretations of Hollywood's rich and famous, perhaps none more so than the riotous Marx Brothers. In fact, Hirschfeld's drawings became a rare case of life imitating art when MGM began to style the Brothers' looks after their illustrated counterparts, especially the triangular shape of Groucho's hair. Poster artists the world over began to emulate Hirschfeld's distinctive style for foreign release posters, his caricatures becoming just as recognizable as photos of the Brothers themselves. A piece of special note, this illustration was the last image of the comedic trio Hirschfeld ever drew, a recreation of his artwork found on the title card and midget window card for A Day at the Races. Groucho, Chico, and Harpo are rendered with great detail in ink and are situated on top of a collage made of real sheet music, just like the original. Bearing the artist's iconic signature, this unique piece shows only unobtrusive stains and smudges, which likely occurred during the creation process. The adhesive used for the pieces of sheet music has started to show some signs of age, however this does not affect the grade nor the piece's overall presentation.
