    Description

    The Fak Hongs (c. 1920s). Spanish Magic Poster (49.5" X 73") "Numero D' Illusion."
Magician shows enjoyed their heyday at the turn of the 20th century, especially those promising exotic feats of sorcery from far-flung locations. This gave rise to the popular image of Asian mystics, bestowing their ancient magic on Western audiences for an evening of fantastical entertainment. Of course, very few, if any, of these performers possessed even a drop of Eastern heritage. Such was the case of the Fak Hong troupe, popular across Europe in the 1920s and 30s, who performed several illusions surrounded by supposedly oriental trappings. However, domestic visions of the occult reeled in the public just as well pseudo-Asian gimmickry, seen here with the poster's illustrations of demons, skulls, serpents, and a scythe-wielding grim reaper. Although printed in Spain, this incredibly detailed stone litho poster was most likely used in a European-wide tour, as it features both Italian and French text advertising the impressive number of illusions seen in the show. Touchup has been applied to the folds, with mild chips and tears in the borders and folds. There are a couple of minor post-restoration chips in the upper right folds. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
