Statendam Holland-America Line Travel Poster (1929). Poster (31.5" X 41").
Ukrainian born A. M. Cassandre (1907-1968) moved to Paris where he established himself in the 1920s as a commercial poster artist and typeface designer. Recognized as the leading figure in the new Machine Age poster style, Cassandre's work embodied the prevailing Jazz Age fascination with power and speed. This poster for the Holland-America line is striking in its spatial arrangement, and features geometric ventilation cowls and smoke stacks contrasting with tendril-like waves of smoke. It heralds the launch of the Statendam in the spring of 1929, touting the liner's comfort and graphically confirming its brawn. The piece has never been folded, and shows a few pinholes in the corners and image area, and touchup has been applied to tears in the borders. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
