    Description

St Gervais-Les-Bains Travel Poster (Paris Lyon Mediteranée Rail Line,1930). Poster (25" X 39").
Parisian born illustrator Roger Broders (1883-1953) was hired by the PLM rail line in 1922 to create posters promoting rail travel throughout France. Broders designed some of the most captivating images over the next decade, including this skiscape known as St. Gervais-Les-Bains in the French Alps. In Broders's signature bold lettering the "Téléférique" is heralded, the region's first enclosed gondola. A "funiculaire," or cable railway, ascends the steep mountainside in the background, and one can almost feel the crunch of fresh powder, taste the thin alpine air, and smell the trail of aftershave from the Hemingway-esque chap whisking by in the foreground. If skiing isn't your bag, vacationers can enjoy the skating rink, another winter wonderland diversion promised by this exceptionally rare stone litho travel poster. Note that this piece has a small SNCF snipe in the upper left corner, which is the rail company that acquired PLM in 1938. Although printed in 1930, the poster was most likely used in later years, hence the designation of the new name. The demand for works by Broders has surged in recent years, making this example an excellent find for collectors dedicated to the travel genre. An added bonus is the condition of the poster, as only very faint toning along the edges and a tiny bit of foxing in the bottom corners can be detected. Very Fine+ on Linen.
