Soviet Propaganda (1952). Russian Poster (22" X 35") "European Commonwealth," I. Semenov Artwork.
Simply entitled "European Commonwealth," this rather clever Russian propaganda poster is one of the best from the Cold War era. It clearly demonstrates that, on the surface, all of the allies of the European nations pretend to be the closest of friends. But, in reality, they are constantly at work to destroy each other. Under the table, they are pickpockets, saboteurs, thieves, and murderers, all feigning cooperation while looking over a map of Western Europe dominated by the American flag. Uncle Sam carries such diseases as Typhus and Cholera in his belt while struggling to steal "colonial profits." At the bottom of the image, of course, is an atomic bomb. The poster then states, "It's clear and understandable for anyone, the price of the Commonwealth is this: a smile on the lips, a lie in the speech, lies in thoughts, and a knife in the back." Professional restoration to this fascinating bit of propaganda has addressed edge wear with small tears and tiny chips in the borders. There was a vertical tear from the top border down to the dividing line near the left border and faint creasing in the image area. The borders and part of the white background have been airbrushed, however the poster now displays very nicely. Fine+ on Linen.
