    Description

    S.F. Cody Wild West Show (c.1893). French Half Grande (37" X 51").
Known as a showman, sharpshooter, horseman, aviator, and aircraft designer, Samuel Franklin Cody held a wide range of interests and talents that led him from the typical life of an Iowa farm boy to a much beloved figure of British aeronautics history. As one of the main attractions during his Wild West Show's European tour, Cody cashed in on the bicycle craze of the 1890s with a series of races pitting him and his horsemanship against famous cyclists. In this particular instance, Cody faced off against the tandem team of M. Fournier and M. Gaby, who won the grueling six hour, 178 kilometer race against Cody by a good five kilometers at the popular cycling arena Velodrome de la Seine. This is Heritage's first time to sell this beautiful poster, which has had restoration applied to the folds, pinholes in the upper corners, two mild vertical tears in the lower horizontal fold, a tear from the bottom border into the lower text, and a few chips in the upper folds. The linen has been trimmed to the border, and the poster still shows a dated tax stamp in the lower right background and a snipe over part of the bottom text. This poster comes with a wonderful custom made black frame which the buyer may have shipped to them. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
