    Description

Mutoscope (International Mutoscope Reel Company, 1920s). Very Fine. Mutoscope Machine (15.75" X 17.5" X 63.5") & Reels (7) (Diameter: 10.5"). From the Collection of Frank Buxton, of which the sale's proceeds will benefit The San Francisco Silent Film Festival.
Restored and updated to working order, this Mutoscope comes with seven reels of shorts, one of baseball legend Babe Ruth, an excerpt from Douglas Fairbanks in The Mystery of the Leaping Fish (Triangle, 1918), Perilous Riding, a Clyde Cook comedy, an excerpt from The Butcher Boy (Paramount, 1917), The Barnstormers (American Mutoscope & biograph, 1905), and an unidentifiable reel. Invented in the 1890s by W.K.L. Dickson and Herman Casler, these early motion picture machines quickly became extremely popular. The Mutoscopes did not use celluloid, but rather cards with photos, which when flipped rapidly by the mechanism created a moving image. One reel called What the Butler Saw was so well known that people began referring to Mutoscopes as "What-the-Butler-Saw machines." This machine shows a few scuffs and scratches, as well as surface wear on the coin drawer. The reels show wear due to age and some have pieces of cellophane tape. Three of the reels come in wooden boxes and the lot includes the keys to the coin drawer and machine.
