Lincoln and York Travel Posters (London and North Eastern Railway, 1931). Posters (2) (25" X 40") Artist: Fred Taylor.
British artist Fred Taylor (1875-1963) was educated at Goldsmith's College before winning a scholarship to study and travel in Italy. From 1908 to the 1940s, Taylor received many commissions, several for designing travel posters for the LNER (London & North Eastern Railway) advertising both domestic and foreign vacation destinations. During the Second World War, he worked for the War Office creating naval camouflage, as well as designing war-time propaganda posters. Presented here are two wonderful examples of Taylor's work for the LNER, featuring the cathedrals of Lincoln and York, with the muted English sunlight seeping through the intricate stained glass windows of the hallowed structures. Both posters have been restored on linen to address signs of wear. York: tears and chips bottom right side and background, missing bottom left corner with tears, a tear and chip along the left side, chip at the top right. Lincoln: chips in the top border with tears, large chip bottom left, chip top left corner and left border. Fine+ on Linen.
