La Traites des Blanches by Jean-Louie Dubut de La Forest (Le Journal, 1899). Very Good/Fine on European Linen. French Newspaper Grande (47" X 73.5") Theophile Alexandre Steinlen Artwork.
A beautiful example of Belle Epoch poster art making its Heritage debut, this poster by the renowned Theophile Alexandre Steinlen showcases the stylistic bridge between the post-impressionist movement into Art Nouveau. Steinlen created numerous French advertisements during his career, many of which are still famous today like his posters for the La Tournée du Chat Noir, Cocorico, and Lait Pur Sterilise de la Vingeanne. This particular advertisement promotes the newspaper Le Journal, specifically the short story installments of La Traites des Blanches by author Jean-Louie Dubut de La Forest. Translating to White Slavery, the story continues in the vein of the author's "novels of manners" which focused on the most scandalous and taboo of topics. So daring were Dubut's works like Le Faiseur d'Hommes and Le Gaga that he was prosecuted and incarcerated for obscenity in 1885. Coincidentally, Dubut de La Forest was a member of the cabaret club Le Chat Noir, which commissioned Steinlen's most famous poster illustration. Printed in stone lithography, this country of origin poster has had some touchup to fold wear and separations, pinholes, chips, and tears into the interior. There is some paper loss in the lower vertical folds and in between the words "Le" and "Journal." These issues are still somewhat visible. The poster has an ink tax stamp in the lower left, shows color fading, and the linen has been trimmed into the border by approximately 1" vertically and horizontally, extending slightly into the upper printing. However, the poster remains not just a gorgeous piece of art, but a fascinating piece of history for collectors.
