    Description

Hal Roach Studio Archive (1939). Autographed Letters (204), Carbon Letters (151), Telegrams (52), & Other Documents (25) (Various Sizes). Miscellaneous.
A goldmine of original documents from the publicity offices of Hal Roach Studio. 1939 was a banner year for the Hal Roach Studio. They embarked diligently on a switch from comedy shorts to feature length "A" films. Some of their best films came from that year... Of Mice and Men, The Housekeeper's Daughter, Zenobia, Son of Fury, and others. Included in this lot are great letters and documents about the intense battle between Roach and the Hays office over the racy ads for The Housekeeper's Daughter (who refused to let the title be The Farmer's Daughter !!); proposed limericks for Topper Takes a Trip publicity; information on how the posters were printed, their number, prices, and distribution; great letters to and from United Artists about all of their films; intriguing telegrams from John Hertz Jr. (Myrna Loy's husband) about phony story plants in Variety; fun letters from Doug Churchill (story writer for Platinum Blonde) raking Roach studios over the coals for Roach's attitude of "to hell with the New York Times, and Hooray for Hearst!"; and many more topics, too numerous to mention! Unrestored letters and documents with good color and an overall very presentable appearance. They may have tears, slight paper loss, staple holes, minor stains, and/or some fold and edge wear. Please see full-color, enlargeable image below for more details. Fine+.
